PHL250 x #InvestBLK

#InvestBLK has supported Philadelphia250 with racial equity and DEIA strategies since 2021. Our work began with community listening sessions to inform the 50-page DEIA plan. During that time we also developed the DEIA lens for the organization’s narrative work in concert with its communications team.

We then expanded to support the Leave-a-Legacy projects providing technical assistance, community engagement support and management, and facilitation and course development for the LAL community. During that time we also developed the community engagement strategy that hired two community liaisons to do relationship building in Wes, North, Northwest, and South Philadelphia.

Our team also led the development of Indigenous land acknowledgement informed by members of Philadelphia’s Native community. Moreover, we have facilitated DEIA centered discussions with various stakeholders and led sessions for the Board retreat. Most recently, we engaged city council, and several community partners to develop PHL250’s first MLK Day of Service event. We have engaged with 361 people from 45 zip codes ranging in ages 8 - 80+ and we have engaged with more than 225 organizations, government offices, and agencies across the city.

Lead Consultant

Dennis Maurice Dumpson founded #InvestBLK in October 2019 and institutionalized it as a business in January 2020. The pandemic was an interesting entry point for starting a new business, but after the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, the world learned that we had two pandemics we were facing -- the global health crises of COVID-19 and racism.

Since that time, Dennis and a team of sub-consultants have partnered with more than 30 organizations, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, La Salle University, Lincoln University of PA, Montgomery Child Advocacy Project, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, United Way of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey & Social Venture Partners, KIPP, and, of course, Philadelphia250 to provide substantive racial equity and community engagement support.

Project Highlights 2021 - 2024

In 2022, we presented a 50 page strategic plan with recommendations and critical issues to PHL250 after 6 months of community listening.

We prepared the community plan and managed 2 Community Liaisons to engage communities. They offered recommendations.

In 2021 we began community listening in virtual spaces. Video footage is attached from some of those sessions.

Project Highlights 2021 - 2024

In 2022, we asked staff what they thought about PHL250's aspirations and plan, their view on leadership, and their perspective on 2026!

We provided facilitated discussions, workshops on community engagement, fundraising, etc. to the LAL participants

We implemented the idea for PHL250's first neighborhood activated day of service project.
